Scientists Create "No Tears" Onion

Scientists in New Zealand and Japan have created a "tear-free" onion using biotechnology to switch off the gene behind the enzyme that makes us cry, one of the leading researchers said Friday. The
discovery could signal an end to one of cooking's eternal puzzles: why does cutting up a simple onion sting the eyes and trigger teardrops? The research institute in New Zealand, Crop and Food, used
gene-silencing technology to make the breakthrough which it hopes could lead to a prototype onion hitting the market in a decade's time. Colin Eady, the institute's senior scientist, said the project started in
2002 after Japanese scientists located the gene responsible for producing the agent behind the tears.

"We previously thought the tearing agent was produced spontaneously by cutting onions, but they proved it was controlled by an enzyme," he told AFP from his home outside Christchurch. "Here in New
Zealand we had the ability to insert DNA into onions, using gene-silencing technology developed by Australian scientists. "The technology creates a sequence that switches off the tear-inducing gene in the
onion so it doesn't produce the enzyme. So when you slice the vegetable, it doesn't produce tears.

" Eady said that by stopping sulphur compounds from being converted to the tearing agent and redirecting them into compounds responsible for flavour and health, the process could even improve the taste
of the onion. "We anticipate that the health and flavour profiles will actually be enhanced by what we've done," he said.

History of the Ouija Board
Deena Budd
BellaOnline's Paranormal Editor

Although accounts of the first historical origins of Ouija boards vary depending on one’s source, most agree that the Spiritualist movement in the United States began in 1848 in Hydesville, New York. Two
sisters, Catherine and Margaret Fox, contacted a spirit and started an interest in psychic phenomena that swept across Europe and America. One account I read indicated that the girls communicated with
the spirit of a peddler. Another states that the spirit was a man who had been murdered in their home. In any case, the girls became famous.

Various devices were used in attempts to communicate with the dead including table tilting, pendulum swinging, automatic writing, and a small wooden tablet affixed with legs and a pencil, called a
planchette.

The first patent for a “talking board” was filed in 1890 by inventor Elijah Bond, and Charles Kennard and William Maupin, businessmen, all of Baltimore. It is not certain that Elijah Bond actually invented the
board. According to Troy Taylor, author of a number of books on the paranormal, a carpenter named E.C. Reiche has also been credited with the invention, and then selling it to his friend, Kennard.

Galviston County Daily News - Between the lines: Just plane crazy?
By Mark Collette

Two weeks after dozens of residents in Stephenville, a dairy town near Fort Worth, reported seeing military aircraft chasing a UFO, the Air Force has reversed its previous statement that none of its planes
were in the area Jan. 8.

Now, according to The Associated Press, the Air Force said it made a mistake and wanted to set the record straight “in the interest of public awareness.” The military says it had 10 F-16 fighter jets training
in the area on Jan. 8. But residents, including respected business owners and a constable, say the military planes were chasing something much larger, faster, quieter and closer to the ground than an
airplane.

30 Hour UFO Landing Reported in Mexico
04-Feb-2008

A UFO with glowing lights has reportedly spent thirty hours on the ground in an isolated area of Mexico about a hundred miles east of Acapulco. The object landed in the early morning hours of December,
2007 near Mezcala, Mexico and emitted flashes of light. It was observed by the entire community, including local citizens and personnel at a local gold mine. Witnesses described a saucer-shaped craft that
passed over the town square slowly and silently, then landed on a hill locally known as Pie de Minas, Mine Hill. It remained on the hill, emitting bursts of flashes, for over 30 hours. There were physical
injuries and electrical disturbances reported, as well.

Attempts to take videos and photos reportedly failed due to apparent distortions caused by the object. Even pictures taken with analog cameras were overexposed. Such problems have often been reported
in connection with UFO close encounters, and witnesses also reported eye irritation despite the fact that they did not approach the object. It was in an area approachable only by hiking for a number of
hours or using an all-terrain vehicle.

Whether or not anybody got close to the object or was successful in taking video or photographs is not yet known. The case is under investigation by the Institute of Hispanic UFOlogy, and they hope to
enter the area where the craft landed and search for any evidence of its presence. Thanks to Scott Corrales, IHU. To read their report,

UFO Spotted Over Foggy Car Park?
http://www.metro.co.uk/news/article.html?in_article_id=98735&in_page_id=34

It may look like just another car park on a foggy night, but an amateur photographer claims it also shows a UFO. A disc-shaped object appears to be
hovering in the night sky near the top right of the picture, according to Hab Rahman, who captured  the image.

The 28-year-old took the photograph near his home in Portsmouth while driving home from work in thick fog. But he only spotted the mysterious apparition
after transferring the image on to his computer.

Mr Rahman said: 'I've never really believed in UFOs but this is a bit weird and freaky – I just cannot think what else it could be.' UFO expert Hilary Porter, of
the British Earth and Aerial Mysteries Society, last night confirmed it could be genuine.

She said: 'It would be very difficult to fake that photo and the UFO is at a tilt, which is the way they normally fly.' The Ministry of Defence said it could not
check if there were any aircraft in the vicinity at the time.

NASA baffled by unexplained force

Mysteriously, five spacecraft that flew past the Earth have each displayed unexpected anomalies in their motions. These newfound enigmas join the so-called "Pioneer anomaly" as hints that unexplained
forces may appear to act on spacecraft.

A decade ago, after rigorous analyses, anomalies were seen with the identical Pioneer 10 and 11 spacecraft as they hurtled out of the solar system. Both seemed to experience a tiny but unexplained
constant acceleration toward the sun. A host of explanations have been bandied about for the Pioneer anomaly. At times these are rooted in conventional science — perhaps leaks from the spacecraft have
affected their trajectories. At times these are rooted in more speculative physics — maybe the law of gravity itself needs to be modified.

Now Jet Propulsion Laboratory astronomer John Anderson and his colleagues — who originally helped uncover the Pioneer anomaly — have discovered that five spacecraft each raced either a tiny bit
faster or slower than expected when they flew past the Earth en route to other parts of the solar system. 'humble and perplexed': The researchers looked at six deep-space probes — Galileo I and II to
Jupiter, the NEAR mission to the asteroid Eros, the Rosetta probe to a comet, Cassini to Saturn, and the MESSENGER craft to Mercury. Each spacecraft flew past the our planet to either gain or lose orbital
energy in their quests to reach their eventual targets. In five of the six flybys, the scientists have confirmed anomalies.

"I am feeling both humble and perplexed by this," said Anderson, who is now working as a retiree. "There is something very strange going on with spacecraft motions. We have no convincing explanation
for either the Pioneer anomaly or the flyby anomaly." In the one probe the researchers did not confirm a noticeable anomaly with, MESSENGER, the spacecraft approached the Earth at about latitude 31
degrees north and receded from the Earth at about latitude 32 degrees south.

New Search for Alien Life is Planned

U.S. astronomers say they are developing plans to use the new Allen Telescope Array to search for extraterrestrial
intelligence in the Milky Way Galaxy.

Johns Hopkins University Professor Richard Conn Henry is joining forces with Seth Shostak of the SETI (Search for
Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence) Institute and Steven Kilston of the Henry Foundation Inc., a Maryland think tank, to search a
swath of the sky known as the ecliptic plane.

The telescope array, consisting of hundreds of small dishes, provides the capability to search for possible signals from
technologically advanced civilizations in the galaxy.
